A principio del 2000, el gobernador de la Reserva Federal Americana, Ben Bernanke evocó la posibilidad de repartir dinero para luchar contra la deflación. Por eso le llamaron “Ben el helicóptero”. Lo explicaba así: "El Congreso aprueba un programa fiscal de 100.000 millones de dólares, 50.000 millones para incrementar el gasto público y los otros 50.000 millones para una devolución de impuestos. En lugar de financiar este programa con una emisión de deuda, la Reserva Federal abriría una cuenta de 100.000 millones de dólares para el Tesoro de EEUU. Otra alternativa equivalente consiste en que el Tesoro emita 100.000 millones en deuda y la Reserva Federal se comprometa a comprar y mantener de forma indefinida esa deuda", explica el célebre economista. Paul Krugman apoyó una medida más original: que el Presidente autorizara la acuñación de una única moneda de un billón de dólares (puede hacerlo sin autorización del Congreso si es por interés numismático) sobre la cual la Reserva Federal podía emitir dinero. Parece mentira, pero es verdad.
